Give Yourself the Gift of Giving

As we move into the last month of 2012, with the Holiday Season looming before us, what are you feeling? Are you: joyous, overwhelmed, happy, tired, excited, frustrated or elated? Whatever you are feeling, my question to you is:

What do you want out of this Holiday Season?

With all of the seemingly endless lists of “shoulds” that come with the Holidays, what is the one thing that will bring a smile to your face?

Since this is the season of giving, I would like to suggest a simple exercise. Pick one person in your life (whether it is personal or professional) who you would like to recognize and give them a bit of joy this season. It could be:

  • The person from whom you buy coffee.

  • The receptionist at one of your client/vendors/customers sites who always has a smile.

  • For that matter it could be someone who answers the phone with a cheery voice every time that you call.

  • It can be a co-worker, mentor, a speaker who inspired you, an author whose book you loved.

  • It could be the neighbor’s child who always had a wave and a giggle.

  • It could be some nameless, faceless person to whom you donate a gift.

  • It could be a volunteer organization to whom you give your time.

  • It could be a friend, family member or special loved one.

The key here is that whatever you are feeling during the Holiday season – studies have shown that the act of giving will help bring joy back into your life.

Two notes on this. If you decide to give to a seemingly “random” person you need to explain your actions. It might be as simple as a note or a spoken word that says.

"This year I decided to give a gift of joy to a person in my life that gives me joy – when I thought about all of those people you were the one who came to the top of my mind. Thank you for___________.”

My second note is to give yourself permission to give yourself a gift. In the midst of all of the Christmas hustle and bustle you might want to:

  • Have coffee/lunch with a friend that you have not seen in a while

  • Take a bubble bath.

  • Play your favorite video game for an hour

  • Go to a bookstore – buy/download a book and spend an hour reading it.

  • Take a ride/walk, either alone or with loved ones and look at the Holiday decorations.

  • Get a spa, nail, hair treatment.

  • Give yourself an extra-long workout or follow your workout with a massage.

  • Drink a glass of champagne with a friend.

By giving an unexpected gift to a random person, and another to yourself, you have broken through the barrier of “shoulds,” and done something joyous for yourself. Congratulations, you are deriving results from within.

“Wishing each of you and those that are close to you, a very Happy Holiday season. May you take a moment to truly compliment yourself and those around you for stellar performance this year. Thank you for your loyal support of these newsletters and my business throughout 2012; I wish each of you, a New Year that is filled with the best of the best!” - Coach Vickie
