Does Your Team See the Big Picture?

For the last six years, I am honored to have been a participant in the Woman’s Advantage Calendar. It is humbling to consider that my leadership quote has been selected for the calendar, year after year, from a pool of more than 5,000 submissions. The format of the calendar is a familiar one – for each day of the year, a successful woman entrepreneur offers an inspiring thought or a challenging quote. My colleagues, clients and friends all find these quotes to be like little gifts of wisdom, applicable to all business professionals regardless of industry, function, or experience.

Over the years, I have made it a practice to share the calendars with my clients and colleagues. Many, I am pleased to say, look forward to the annual gift and make it a practice to communicate special quotes with their teams, staff and customers – some even share them to inspire their children!

The story that I would like to relay is that of a client to whom I gave a copy of the 2012 calendar. After the heartfelt appreciative remarks, she made a comment that gave me pause. She said, “It is my goal to someday have my words in this calendar”. In true coach-like fashion, I was intrigued and asked her what her quote would be. Without hesitation, she said:

“If you want your team to see and understand the big picture, get out of their line of sight!”

How awesome is that? These words were so inspirational to me that I had to share them with you.

Although we are almost halfway through the year 2012, my question is this….could you be “in the way” and preventing your team from seeing the big picture? Could “getting out of the way” be a solution to help develop your team and ensure that they both SEE and UNDERSTAND the big picture?

If you have any thoughts, suggestions or tips that have worked for you in the past, please share them with me and I may build a future newsletter based on the shared knowledge. Congratulations; by using this mindset of helping your team see the big picture by getting out of their way, you will make your performance in 2012 the best that it has ever been, and you are deriving results from within.
