Do not ask "WHAT" ask "WHO" can help me?
Have you ever been to a live theater performance? I have been a fan of Broadway shows since I saw my first performance when I was 13 years old. I continue to be
transfixed by the magical way that messages are transmitted, characters come alive and emotions are deeply touched ….all from the mysterious power conjured by the talented artists on stage to the willing spectators in the audience.
The current show Wicked is the unlikely story of how the “good” witch and the “bad” witch get to know each other and become friends. Near the end there are some lines in a song that truly touched me. They are:
I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason. Brining something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow …if we let them.

When I think about business leaders trying to single-handedly run interference for their team, I am reminded of a conversation that I had recently with James. He is the Head of Supply Chain for a global biotheraputic firm and as such he believes that “the buck stops with him” for all of the manufacturing facility. He just had his performance review and although he exceeded
all of his objectives it was not without a lot of pain, stress and “taking one (or more) for the team”. His manufacturing facilities were in transition to “lean” manufacturing and as with any “transition” things fell through the cracks, inventory was dangerously low and deadlines were close to being missed. James confessed to me that he consistently took the brunt of weekly “public floggings” by his boss to keep morale up and to
protect his team.
As his coach, this worried me on so many levels. My first question to him was “how do you believe that you can continue to sustain being the organizational umbrella of bad stuff?” After much discussion of this seemingly helpless situation he mentioned that there were two people – his former boss and a colleague that he could probably talk with and request some help/input.
BINGO! At that moment he realized that – none of us business leaders need to go through bad situations being the organizational human shield against the bully boss, customer, supplier or executive champion. When things seem the most helpless, that is the time to look for the people who can most help YOU. In my experience your universe will send you what you need to grow – “if we let them in”.
In your next helpless moment take a look around and see what the universe has sent you to help you through. Congratulations, you have taken the first step towards looking for help and
deriving results from within.
