May 2005 Asking for Feedback

Has this ever happened to you? You work very hard on one of the following “big projects”:

  • Getting the proposal out the door
  • Finishing the latest software release
  • Completing a customer installation
  • Giving a big presentation

When completed, everyone congratulates you, says that you did a great job, and you might even celebrate your success. Then, the next day it is back to business as usual.

Suppose that you were to develop a process or a system for soliciting specific feedback on your performance. Would you actively request feedback? Does that word “feedback” scare you? What would you actually do with this information?

Last month I announced my new website www.CoachVickie.com. Have you had the opportunity to check it out yet? Can you believe that the hardest part of assembling the website was the testimonials page? Requesting feedback from my clients on what I do well, not so well and what benefits I provide to them is part of my coaching platform. During the testimonial collection phase, I started to wonder how diligent my Clients are with gathering feedback. I discovered that this process is often overlooked. Imagine if you obtained six written “testimonials” per year on how your performance was benefiting others. You could use the feedback for:

  • Performance Reviews
  • Career Development
  • Introductions – Personal Commercials
  • Assigning work within your team
  • Time Management
  • Proactively Seeking Projects that you would like to work on

Now, for your homework. In the next month, request specific feedback on your performance in the last six months from three sources. You might be amazed at what you will discover about yourself and other’s perceptions of you. Next, think of three areas of your professional life where you could use this information to actively increase your worth to your organization.

Congratulations, you are beginning to learn one of the secrets to deriving results from within.
